Cafe Spotlight: The Grisley Bear Cafe, Richmond VIC

Cafe Spotlight: The Grisley Bear Cafe, Richmond VIC

Small in size but big in heart, Grisley Bear café is a hole-in-the-wall cafe serving the locals of Richmond. Owner and chef, Robert Princi and his right-hand man and barista Matt Lonergan have been sharing their passion for coffee, fresh food and a love of the AFL with regulars for over six years.

Mornings at Grisley Bear generally consist of ongoing AFL banter between coffees. It’s also a popular take away option on a Wednesday when they offer a roast chook and spud special, a tempting option for those who want a quick and tasty meal mid-week for home.

Robert has been cooking for over 20 years with over 12 years of fine dining experience in London and Milan as well as well-known restaurants, Grossi Florentino and Jacques Reymond. Consistent 80+ working hour weeks prompted Robert to settle down in a small space he could call his own.

Over the years Robert has moved from simple sandwiches to a more diverse menu which includes lasagne, pizza, salad and even caters for local businesses. With an Italian background and influenced by his previous experience, Robert leaves nothing to waste, creating ways to incorporate his homemade sauces into new dishes each day.

With a small oven and induction cooker, Robert is limited in what he can create, but pushes the boundaries to deliver a consistent new offering every day. What some people would find a challenging space to work in, the duo running the café wouldn’t want it any other way. Robert and Matt have worked out their workflow to a ‘T’ and how to maximise the area to create quality coffee and food without compromise.

With Matt making coffee on a bright yellow La Marzocco by the window, you cannot help but stop and admire the size of this café and the way these two fellas work together. Grisley Bear Café uses our Estate blend which they believe is a good all-rounder and keeps their customer happy. It would be a shame not to pop by this tiny café and check it out!
