Laid back Adelaide was shaken up over the third and fourth of the month for a series of barista competitions organised by the CafeBiz team as part of the AHA Hospitality and Catering Exhibition.
Both the Da Vinci Trans Tasman and the Coffee Chain Challenge emphasise the teamwork and speed that are hallmarks of successful cafes today. Reflecting the fact that milk drinks make up the bulk of the market, the CafeBiz competitions also recognise latte artistry.
After tantalising us with a victory in the first round of the Da Vinci Trans Tasman, Australia’s Baristaroos braced themselves for a serious onslaught from NZ’s Black Cups in the second round. Despite strong competition, David, Con, Zoe and team leader Justin Metcalf pressed the home field advantage to walk away with the title.
Melbourne chain Headquarters (HQ) threw down the gauntlet to last year’s Coffee Chain Challenge winners, Michel’s Patisserie. Michel’s did a great job, taking last minute competitor substitutions in stride. On the HQ side, competition veterans Erin and Simon, both of whom placed highly in the Victorian barista competition, joined barista Sarah to push the drinks out at a cracking speed. When the dust settled, the barrage of HQ drinks won the day.
We would like to thank Simon James for the photograph.
