We are extremely excited to announce that we’ll be hosting Q Grader courses at our brand new training studios in Richmond, Melbourne from March 20 – 26.

The very amazing Andrew Hetzel will lead the courses over the seven days. Andrew is a Q Arabica and Robusta instructor, he leads Q Grader certificate courses for Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) and leading specialty coffee businesses worldwide.

Andrew is a Board Member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) and board liaison overseeing SCAA’s Educational Pathways and annual event lecture programs. He also runs his own coffee quality and trade consultancy business, Coffee Makers, based in Hawaii.

The CQI designed the Q Grader program to create a skilled and credible body of specialty Arabica coffee cuppers.

Q Graders are recognised as cuppers skilled to:

  • Objectively assess coffee quality
  • Identify, quantify and articulate coffee characteristics
  • Detect coffee defects
  • Communicate coffee characteristics using common industry terminology

Upon successful completion of the Q Grader program, certified Q Graders are permitted to evaluate Arabica coffees for CQI or a CQI In-country Partner.

A Q Grader certificate is valid for three years and is renewable upon completion by an accredited calibration course.

Although CQI calls this a ‘teaching exam’, this course is designed for cuppers with some formal training or alternatively coffee professionals with practical experience. If you’re a beginner cupper, we urge you to develop your cupping skills before sitting the course.

The full 6-day course course comprises a 3-day series of practice exercises followed by an intense 3-day series of exams.
