Finca Chispita produced one of our favourite coffees last year, and this year we are excited to showcase their fresh, 2019 harvest. SL-28 isn’t common in Latin America making this Yellow Honey lot particularly special and a unique opportunity to experience the influence that terroir has on this varietal. This year we are proud to have purchased the entirety of Finca Chispita’s honey processed SL-28 production totalling 112 kilograms of green coffee, shipped in vacuum packs to maintain the unique character of this coffee for as long as possible.

Carlos Barrantes’s family has owned and operated the Herbazu micromill since the early 2000s, in the early 2010’s Don Carlos decided to go off and work independently, with a focus on high quality, unique coffees. He and his wife, Diana, now own five small farms and La Perla Del Cafe Micromill. The Barrantes only produce around 300 bags a year, allowing dedication to quality and incredibly high attention to detail. They even work with the exact same group of pickers every year, a group of 45 indigenous people from Panama who travel to the farms for work every harvest season, and with whom the Barrantes keep in touch, like family, the rest of the year.

The La Perla mill produces mostly honey and natural coffees, and Carlos likes to experiment with different varietals: He currently grows Gesha, Villa Lobos, Typica, Villa Sarchi, and SL-28. This particular lot is an SL-28 varietal, of which Carlos was the first producer in Costa Rica. Native to Tanganyika (now Tanzania), and related to Bourbon, SL-28 was selected from a single tree by Scott Laboratories in 1935. Originally selected for it’s drought resistance it is considered the prize varietal of the 1935-1939 intensive breeding by Scott Laboratories. SL-28 is now one of the main varietals grown throughout Africa and valued for its high cup quality despite its susceptibility to major diseases, however it isn’t common in Latin America which is what makes this Golden Honey lot so special.‌
