Kenyan’s are back! And this one is from the mill that produced some of our favourite coffee’s last year.
Handege Coffee Factory is from the Kiambu County in the former central province, around 54km North West of Nairobi. The washing station or “coffee factory” is part of the broader Ritho Society. Ritho also works with the famous Wamaguma factory who we have bought coffee from in previous years. The name “Handege” is derived from Ndege, the Swahili word for aeroplane.
Handege is a small factory relative to others in the area, with an annual production of around 150 tonnes. Cherries are pulped, fermented and washed, then sun-dried on raised African drying tables. Dry parchment is then taken to a dry mill for hulling and grading after which it is delivered to a secure warehouse prior to Auction.
