Veneziano Coffee is proud to let you know that our very own David Makin has won the Victorian Barista of the Year competition: again!
David won the competition hands down with Australia’s highest score in the preliminary rounds, for the second time in two years.
Competing against the cream of Victoria’s baristas, David won the AASCA Victorian title on Friday the 18th of March.
David scored bonus points from the judges with his signature drink ‘Rocky Road’. He delighted the judges and onlookers by blending chocolate, peanut-butter, marshmallows and French Vanilla syrup into a creation that was warmed and melted together- topped with a shot of espresso. Competing baristas must make 12 coffees in 15 minutes of competition time: four espresso coffees, four cappuccinos and four of the baristas own signature drink.
The baristas are evaluated by a panel of seven judges in total. Four are responsible for judging the sensory aspects of the served coffee: the smell; taste and feel of the coffee on the pallet. Two judges asses the technical side of the coffee making process, and one is the head judge who oversees the whole procedure.
