Giakanja washing station is located in the Nyeri county and operated by the Giakanja Farmers' Cooperative Society (FCS). Coffee is cultivated on farms that lie between the southern slopes of Mt. Kenya and the foothills of the Aberdare mountain range. The farms are compact averaging 250 to 350 trees with the main varietals being SL28, SL34, Batian and Ruiru 11.
Batian is a relatively new variety introduced by the Kenya Coffee Research Institute in 2010. Batian takes its name from the highest peak on Mt Kenya and it is disease resistant. Ruiru 11 is another new variety known for its high yields producing fruit after just 2 years.
