Cafe Review: Sazón, Mount Barker SA

Drive just over 30 minutes out of the Adelaide CBD and you’ll find yourself in the Adelaide Hills, famously known for its cool-climate wines. Continue down the road and you’ll arrive in Mount Barker – one of the fastest growing regions in South Australia.

Sazón is an institution in Mount Barker having been open for several years. It’s always busy and bustling and known as the place to go for a great cup of coffee.

Sazón is owned and run by cousins Oswaldo and Jose who were originally born and raised in Mexico. They came to Australia for a 12-month holiday and never left. With a background in hospitality in Mexico, they decided to set up shop and bring Adelaide a little taste of their home, Mexico, and so, Sazón was born.

According to Oswaldo, in Mexico, Sazón means “the passion you put into something or the spices you use to flavour a dish”. It seemed like the perfect name for their new venture and you can certainly see the passion oozing out of this place!

From the first step inside you truly feel like you’ve been transported to Mexico, its hard to believe you’re in little Mount Barker. The fit out has been well thought out, and it’s the little details that make the difference – exposed brick walls, pressed metal ceilings, marble benches, traditional Mexican bowls and plates, cactus plants as well as Mexican wine and tequila all around the place.

The menu is obviously Mexican inspired and absolutely mouthwatering. The must try dish here is the Huevos Rancheros – Mexican style free range eggs, with chorizo sausages served with fresh tomato salsa on a flour tortilla. But there’s so many amazing dishes it’s pretty hard to choose. There’s heaps of share plates and substantial salads like grilled chipotle chicken, grilled halloumi and pomegranate, roast pumpkin, pear and quinoa. Not to mention a delectable sweets cabinet, and fresh smoothies and juices for those who a little health conscious.

Sazón also opens its doors for one night only each week with an authentic Mexican street-food menu. Customers can choose from a selection of traditional Mexican meals including soft tacos, quesadillas, quesos fundidos as well as a huge variety of margaritas, tequilas, Mexican beers and wines oh and some great Latino tunes.

Sazón have been serving Veneziano’s Forza blend for the past 5 years. When they first opened their doors they served an average of 15kg of coffee per week but since the switch they quickly increased that to an impressive 110kg per week. Jose said “as we grew we knew we needed a coffee supplier we could rely on in terms of consistency, training and support. And we love the Forza blend. It cuts through milk really well, it’s gutsy with body and flavour and most of all is versatile – tasty as black and perfect with milk. It’s the perfect all-rounder for us”.
