In conjunction with International Women’s Day, we’re excited to showcase some incredible coffees from Matão Women in Coffee Project (Mulheres do Café).
Formed in 2013, Mulheres do Café comprises 24 female coffee producers from the township of Tomazina in the Norte Pioneiro region.
With selective picking a rarity in Brazil, the project has seen their quality increase exponentially and their hard work was rewarded in 2015 when they placed first in the Paraná quality contest.
Like many producers in the world, these women had never tasted their own coffee, until recently. Now, they undertake cupping education programs, learning to identify lots that stand out in quality. For the future, the group wants to continue to increase the quality and production of coffee, as well qualify and prepare themselves to identify their own coffees.
We were proud to be their first ever Australian customer last year, paying premiums well above what they would normally receive. This allows them to invest more in educating these women about the coffee they are growing and also in quality of life. This is an incredibly exciting project to be a part of and we look forward to seeing what these women can produce in the future.
This year we have three lots from Maria Veronica, Laura de Oliveira and Maristela Souza.
